It’s-a-me MARRRIIOOO!!
Who doesn’t remember that sound as soon as you popped the game cart into your Nintendo64 back in 1996.
I sure as hell do and I heard it again this week when I went back for our first Retro Rewind and played it all, all over again.
So how does the original stack up today? Find out after the jump.
Super Mario 64 was Nintendo’s first 3D polygonal game and it shows.
The graphics are extremely dated and the gameplay is very simplistic compared to the likes of something like Super Mario Galaxy 1 or 2…. however, that didn’t make this play through any less fun.
Actually what happened was, the further I played the less I cared about how it did or didn’t look or play, it was still fun after all these years.

Where's that owl gone?
Super Mario 64 is one of those rare games that, no matter how old it gets it’s still a lot of fun to play. I was never able to finish it for some reason back in “96 and I couldn’t remember why… until now.
Having gone back and played all stages, I can now remember why I never finished it….. It’s damn hard later on towards the end.
Yes even after all these years with games getting more robust, SM64 still has some higher difficulty levels later on in the game.

Rainbow Ride, one of the harder levels.
There are a lot of things to do in SM64.
If you want to spend a lot of time with the game and collect 120 stars then you can.
If you just want to get to the end as quick as you can, you will only need about 70 stars to be able to unlock all rooms and eventually get to the last Bowser.
The Bowser fights are pretty easy, which makes up for the difficulty during the everyday levels.
You simply have to grab his tail, spin and release him on a bomb around the arena whilst he is doing something different each time to try and stop you like for instance tilting the game world so it’s hard to reach him.
IT’s all pretty easy to overcome and fun as well.
Ending thoughts:
Super Mario 64 is still a worthy play through if you are in between games at the moment or if you just wish to go back to your childhood and replay something not so….. easy.
The only downside is, the game camera can be a wicked wicked beast and will probably cause many a death and have you yelling in frustration most of the time “WHY WON’T YOU TURN ALL THE WAY AROUND ARRRGGGHH!!!”
Other than that, it’s a great play.
So until next time,
James
