Ricky Gervais and the Golden Globes…again?
Sep 2011 20

Some of you may remember the Golden Globe Awards show earlier this year and its controversial host Ricky Gervais. It is no secret that I love Ricky Gervais. He is one of those comedians who isn’t afraid to push people’s buttons or test the boundaries of that awkward style of humour. This was no more apparent then his performance back in January where he hilariously took the piss out of a number of celebrities in the room.

He injected some life into another boring awards show and while it was very entertaining to audiences, Hollywood did not approve. Considering the night is generally all about stroking egos, Gervais tipped the show on its head and turned it into a roast. Making jokes about Robert Downy Jr’s former substance abuse, Bruce Willis’s awkward relationship with Ashton Kutcher, the age of the Sex and the City girls and even a jab at a number of scientologists. Some people were so shocked by this departure from the show’s tradition that rumours that Gervais was fired during the commercial break even popped up. Despite being one of the most entertaining award shows in years, he upset a lot of influential people and it was quickly announced that he would not be welcomed back to the show in any capacity.

With the next Golden Globes less then four months away, many people are wondering who will be hosting. No doubt the creators of the show will be looking for someone willing to play ball and stay in line. So as you can imagine a lot of us have been less then enthused by the idea of another dull awards show that lacks the cheeky flare of the last. This past year’s Academy Awards showed us just how boring an unfunny awards show can be.

However we may have been saved by none other then Rick Gervais once more. Recently he announced that although having nothing to do with the show itself, Ricky still wants to host. How? He is planning to stream a live three hour podcast commentating on the show. The idea being that while watching the ceremony, you will be able to listen to Ricky’s comedy insights rather then listen to the broadcast soundtrack. But considering there won’t be any sponsors or network interference and he is doing this on his own, he’ll be able to say what he wants about anyone and everyone. An uncensored Ricky Gervais commenting on the Golden Globes! This show suddenly became a must see/listen. Not only that but hopefully he will joined by a number of comic guests like Louis C.K, Chris Rock, Carl Pilkington, and Larry David for segments of the show.

The Awards won’t be happening until January but this idea sounds fun, especially if you like the idea of celebrities being taken down a peg. So what do you think? Do you think it’s worth checking out? And what do you think about Gervais’s previous hosting duties? See you next week.
