Sorry, what was that? Tarzan
Jun 2011 04

Does anyone like Tarzan? Sorry, I meant does anyone remember Tarzan? You know the guy raised by apes, swings on vines and is king of the jungle. It has been a damn long time since anyone tackled the character of Tarzan.

I thing that this is pretty surprising considering that the character is quite literally a precrser to the myth of the superhero (which in case you haven’t noticed is all the rage at the moment) but he is also an established franchise that all but grunts, “ME, REBOOT!”

Tarzan was a character created for magazine publications by Edgar Rice Burroughs, in 1914 (twenty-four years prior to the first appearance of Superman). According to IMDB he has appeared 89 times across movies, tv and video games. For I guy who can’t really speak english he sure does get a lot done, but I guess you can say the same about Schwarzenegger. The last notable work was the 1999 Disney animated movie Tarzan. It was a pretty good movie too, but the last decent live action movie was the 1984 film Greystoke: Legend of Tarzan, staring Christopher Lambert which was a darker more adult look at a man torn between two worlds.

Well this is a news article so you know where this is heading. New Tarzan movie on the way right? Of course not. Hollywood doesn’t do these things by halves so we’re getting a full blown Tarzan Trilogy. Warner Bros and director Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow and Black Snake Moan) are gearing up to bring back the classic character in a big way. Brewer is currently working on the remake of Footloose which comes out in October but plans to jump straight into the Tarzan trilogy project after the release. But they better get a move on, as there are rumours of no less then two other projects in the works about the Ape-man.

What do you think? Want to see Tarzan’s naked chest back on the big screen? Or is this a character who has been lost to the pages of time? Or could you care less?
