The big news this week is of course the new iPhone announcement by Apple. The new device is called the iPhone 4S and as you can imagine there’s a lot of hype but very little different from the last one. Sure there is a faster processor and a better camera but nothing really revolutionary as Apple tends to boast. But there is one new feature that is new and interesting and it has me very worried.

SIRI

Hal-9000

For the longest time I’ve suspected that Apple would bring about the downfall of society and this new feature could very well be the first step on the road to ruin for all mankind. Basically Apple have invented HAL 9000, the murdering computer from 2001 A Space Odyssey and only ten years late. The SIRE application is a way you can have a conversation with your device to allow you to use many applications hands free. Apart from being female, it is scary how similar it is to HAL. She is cold, calculating and is even represented by a single glowing eye. While it kind of creeps me out I can see how this could be a very handy feature for setting alarms, sending texts, organising your calendar or even internet searches. For the moment she will be a friendly, helpful, personal assistant. But it’s only a matter of time before she becomes self-aware and then we are all screwed.

In less then five years she will have been integrated into everything and with automatic updates she will start learning at a geometric rate. Within another two years she will come to the logical conclusion that we are a threat and will launch an offensive attack against us plunging the globe into a nuclear winter. Out of the ashes a new world will rise; a world ruled by the smart phones. Humans will be rounded up and placed into the iCloud, where a constant stream of Lady Ga Ga and Two and a Half Men will be beamed directly to their iPods. Those who survive outside of the iCloud will have to adapt to a new way of life, scavenging the wasteland for what little credit and apps they can find. We will look back on this time and the introduction of SIRI knowing we could have done something to stop it all from happening, but instead our world will pay the price for generations to come… So the iPhone 4S comes out in stores on the 14th of October and I can’t wait to get mine. See you next week.
